Wikipedia Citation Irish scholar Liam Hogan has been tracking and debunking this reincarnated meme since he first saw it in 2013. Last year, Hogan published an impressive five-part series exposing the myth and provided a detailed historical analysis of the origins and evolution of the meme. Hatewatch reached out to Hogan (who you should follow on Twitter) and asked him to share what he's learned in his work. The two groups did not join together in solidarity, however. Instead, the Irish worked to enjoy the same privileges as white Anglo-Saxon Protestants, a feat they accomplished partly at the expense of blacks, according to Noel Ignatiev, author of How the Irish Became White (1995). It ended in 1840 in New South Wales and in 1852 in Van Diemen’s Land (modern Tasmania), which became a colony in 1825. Western Australia, which was founded in 1830 free immigrants, added convicts to its population its own choice from 1850 to 1868. Convicts were not sent to South Australia, which became a colony in 1836. The romantic idea of Ireland as a remote, tranquil place is certainly true of some areas – indeed, it’s a major selling point for many residents and visitors. But Irish people do tire of being asked whether or not they have internet access, or electricity, or cars out there on the edge of Europe – even in jest. True History of the Kelly Gang is a novel Australian writer Peter Carey, based loosely on the history of the Kelly Gang.It was first published in Brisbane the University of Queensland Press in 2000. It won the 2001 Booker Prize and the Commonwealth Writers Prize in the same year. Despite its title, the book is fiction and a variation on the Ned Kelly story. 'When Peter wrote the book [in 2000], I think people in Australia really did believe that he was proclaiming this was the true history,' Kurzel explains. 'The irony of the title was being completely lost. We're openly saying this is a fictitious piece. It's inspired the real character but it's a riff on truth and a riff on re-writing history.
